Choosing the right women’s cross-country skiing jacket: based on temperature, intensity and wind protection

LÖFFLER designs and manufactures women’s cross-country skiing jackets in Ried im Innkreis, Austria. As the official outfitter for the ÖSV Nordic division, we understand the demands of the cross-country trails from the world of elite sport. Our jackets are designed for female cross-country skiers who train, go on tours or compete in races. Airblocc softshell keeps the wind out at the front, whilst elasticated panels allow sweat vapour to escape – so you stay dry and don’t get chilled on the descent.

Which cross-country skiing jacket is right for you?

Choosing the right cross-country skiing jacket for women depends on three factors: temperature, pace and wind. The faster you ski, the lighter the jacket can be. The colder and windier it is, the more of the jacket’s surface area needs to be windproof.

  • Intense training above 0 °C → W Jacket Pro Breeze (item no. 30858, EUR 199.99). The windshell protects the chest, shoulders and collar. The elastic Race-Elastic-Warm fabric on the rest of the jacket allows heat to escape.
  • Fast-paced training in inclement weather → W Jacket Pro AB Ultra (30859, EUR 189.99). Airblocc Ultralight covers the front, shoulders and sleeves. Thermo velour lining on the back keeps you warm whilst remaining breathable.
  • Sporty training in windy and frosty conditions → W Jacket Arrow AB Ultra (30862, EUR 199.99). The entire jacket is made from windproof Airblocc Ultralight, which is super-light yet remains highly elastic.
  • All-round training and touring → W Jacket Alpha AB Light (30072, EUR 179.99). Airblocc Light completely blocks the wind, whilst Race-Elastic-Warm inserts give you freedom of movement.
Changing conditions → W Zip-Off Jacket Vario AB Light (31170, EUR 239.99). You can zip off the sleeves and carry on running in a windproof vest.
  • Cold days at a moderate pace → W Hybrid Jacket Athletica PL60 (30077, EUR 229.99). 60 g of PrimaLoft® GOLD provides warmth at the front. Double-Dry panels on the sides and back wick away moisture.
  • A leisurely pace in bitter cold → W Jacket Calida AB Warm (30075, EUR 239.99). Airblocc Warm features a fleece lining and keeps you warm even at a slow pace.

What a cross-country skiing jacket needs to offer

Cross-country skiing works your arms, legs and core all at once, which is why your body generates a lot of heat and sweat. Unlike in alpine skiing, you hardly ever stand still. A padded ski jacket therefore traps heat after just a few minutes.

A good cross-country skiing jacket for women fulfils four functions:

  1. Wind protection at the front. On descents and when facing a headwind, the wind hits you head-on. A windproof chest panel prevents you from getting cold.
  2. Breathability. Water vapour must escape to the outside, otherwise it will condense inside the jacket. Then you’ll be freezing on the next descent.
  3. Freedom of movement. When using your poles, your shoulders and arms move through a wide range of motion. Stretchy materials and a close-fitting cut prevent the jacket from pulling or riding up.
  4. Lightweight and high visibility. On long sessions, you’ll feel every extra gram on your shoulders and arms. Reflectors make you visible at dusk – all the models mentioned here have them.

Cross-country skiing jacket: depending on temperature and pace

Temperature alone isn’t the deciding factor when choosing the right jacket. A skater doing interval training generates many times more heat than a leisure skier on a classic cross-country trail. You should therefore always choose your jacket based on both factors.

if you feel a bit chilly in the first few minutes, the jacket fits. If you’re already warm as you set off, you’ll be sweating through it after ten minutes.

  • Above +5 °C: At a fast pace, the W Vest AB Light (30083, EUR 149.99) is often sufficient. It protects the torso whilst leaving the arms free. At a moderate pace, opt for the W Jacket Pro Breeze.
  • Between +5 and −5 °C: This is a typical cross-country skiing day. For intense sessions, the Pro Breeze or Pro AB Ultra are suitable. For steady training and cross-country tours, choose the Alpha AB Light or the Arrow AB Ultra.
  • Below −5 °C: Now you need full wind protection. At a fast pace, combine the Arrow AB Ultra with a warmer base layer. At a moderate pace, the Athletica PL60 with its insulated front will keep you warm. At a leisurely pace, wear the Calida AB Warm.

Wind protection or breathability?

You can’t have maximum wind protection and maximum breathability at the same time, as any windproof layer restricts air circulation. LÖFFLER resolves this dilemma through the jacket’s design: windproof fabric is used where the wind hits, whilst breathable fabric is used where you sweat the most.

A comparison of the materials:

  • Windshell is an ultra-lightweight ripstop fabric made from polyamide. It is windproof, water-repellent and suitable for high-intensity sporting activities.
  • Airblocc is a 3-layer softshell with a polyester membrane. The hydrophilic membrane allows water vapour to escape whilst providing complete protection against the wind. Airblocc is made from a single material, is PFAS-free and is manufactured in Europe. The Ultralight version is super-light and highly elastic. The Light version has an interlock lining, whilst the Warm version has a fleece lining.
  • PrimaLoft® GOLD is a lightweight insulation made from 100% recycled fibres. It provides warmth whilst taking up minimal space and dries quickly.

Three designs – three areas of application:

  • Partially windproof (Pro Breeze, Pro AB Ultra): The front blocks the wind, whilst the back remains open. This design is suitable for intensive training and warming up before a race.
  • Fully windproof (Arrow AB Ultra, Alpha AB Light, Vario AB Light, Calida AB Warm): Airblocc protects the entire upper body. This design is suitable for strong winds, frost and a steady pace.
  • Insulated (Athletica PL60): The insulation keeps the front warm, whilst Double Dry wicks moisture away from the sides and back. This design is suitable for cold days with breaks.

Our recommendation: If you’re training intensively, opt for partial wind protection. If you’re running at a leisurely pace or in strong winds, choose a fully windproof Airblocc jacket.

And in wet conditions?

Airblocc is water-repellent but not waterproof – over time, water will seep through in the rain. For wet snow or rain when travelling at a leisurely pace, opt for the W Hooded Jacket COM CF WPM Colibri (30831, EUR 349.99). The stretchy 3-layer fabric withstands a water column of 20,000 mm whilst remaining breathable.

Fit and details: Slim, Mid or Comfort Fit

The cut determines what fits underneath the jacket.

  • Slim Fit is close-fitting and doesn’t flap about. It’s suitable for sports training with one or two thin layers. Examples: Pro Breeze, Pro AB Ultra, Arrow AB Ultra, Alpha AB Light, Athletica PL60.
  • Mid Fit is neither tight nor loose and leaves room for a mid-layer. Examples: Vario AB Light, Calida AB Warm, W Hooded Jacket Vertigo AB Light (30819, EUR 219.99).
  • Comfort Fit offers more freedom of movement and a relaxed fit. Example: W Jacket Faro CF AB Light (30863, EUR 249.99), available in sizes 36 to 50.

Hood or no hood? You don’t need a hood for training and races – it adds weight and flaps about. For tours in windy and snowy conditions, choose a model with an integrated hood. These include the W Hooded Jacket North AB Light (30073, EUR 239.99) and the Vertigo AB Light.

What to wear under your cross-country skiing jacket

A jacket is only as good as the layer underneath it. If your base layer doesn’t wick away sweat, even the most breathable jacket won’t help.

The layering rule: the higher the intensity, the better pure transtex® made from polypropylene works. The lower the intensity, the better transtex® Merino works.

Was du unter der Langlaufjacke trägst

Je höher die Intensität, desto besser passt reines transtex®. Je ruhiger du läufst, desto besser passt transtex® Merino.

Base layers – worn directly against the skin:

  • W Shirt L/S transtex® Light 100 (23144, EUR 54.99): 100% polypropylene does not absorb water and dries extremely quickly – your first choice for intense training.
  • W Long-Sleeved T-shirt transtex® Warm 180 (10745, EUR 69.99): The blend of polypropylene, modal and cotton provides better insulation and is suitable for intense training in freezing conditions.
  • W Long-Sleeved T-shirt transtex® Merino 200 (27462, EUR 89.99): On the inside, polypropylene wicks sweat away from the skin, whilst merino wool provides warmth on the outside. This combination is ideal for moderate-intensity activities in cold weather.

Mid-layer – only when needed:

  • W Midlayer Racing transtex® (30868, EUR 89.99): Half-zip with transtex® Warm for sporting sessions.
  • W Midlayer Motion (30872, EUR 119.99): Highly elastic, lightweight Race Motion fabric with thumb loops.
  • W Midlayer transtex® Merino (26266, EUR 99.99): Keeps you warm at a steady pace and inhibits odour.

The most common mistakes when buying a cross-country skiing jacket

  1. An alpine ski jacket instead of a cross-country skiing jacket: the thick padding traps heat, and you’ll be soaked after the first climb.
  2. Starting out too warm: many female runners put on too many layers. Start out feeling slightly chilly – your body will warm up quickly.
  3. Cotton next to the skin: cotton traps sweat and leaves you feeling cold on the descent. You should therefore always wear functional base layers made of polypropylene or merino wool directly against your skin.
  4. Merino for interval training: Merino wool absorbs moisture into the fibres. At high intensity, pure transtex® dries significantly faster.
  5. No windproof front: A purely elastic running jacket is sufficient on flat sections. On descents, the wind will quickly cool you down without a windproof front.

FAQ: Langlaufjacke Damen

Which cross-country skiing jacket is right for women?

The right cross-country skiing jacket for women depends on the temperature, pace and wind. For intensive training above 0 °C, LÖFFLER recommends the W Jacket Pro Breeze with a windshell front. The fully windproof W Jacket Alpha AB Light is ideal for all-round training and tours. The W Jacket Calida AB Warm, with a fleece lining, is suitable for a leisurely pace in bitterly cold conditions.

When cross-country skiing, do I need more wind protection or better breathability?

When cross-country skiing, you need wind protection at the front and breathability at the back. At high speeds, breathability is more important, which is why a partially windproof jacket like the LÖFFLER Pro Breeze is ideal. At a leisurely pace, in strong winds or in frosty conditions, wind protection is more important – in which case you should choose a fully windproof Airblocc jacket.

How warm does a cross-country skiing jacket need to be?

A cross-country skiing jacket doesn’t need to be as warm as an alpine skiing jacket, because you generate a lot of heat whilst cross-country skiing. Between +5 and −5 °C, a lightweight softshell such as the Airblocc Light or Ultralight is usually sufficient. Below −5 °C at a leisurely pace, you’ll need a lined jacket such as the LÖFFLER Calida AB Warm or an insulated hybrid jacket such as the Athletica PL60.

What should I wear under my cross-country skiing jacket?

Underneath your cross-country skiing jacket, you should wear a base layer made from technical fabric directly against your skin. For intensive training, LÖFFLER recommends transtex® Light, made from 100 per cent polypropylene, which does not absorb water. For moderate speeds and cold conditions, transtex® Merino 200 is suitable. You should only add a mid-layer when skiing at a leisurely pace or in temperatures below −5 °C.

Can I wear a normal ski jacket for cross-country skiing?

An alpine ski jacket isn’t suitable for cross-country skiing because its padding traps too much heat. You’ll be sweating through it after the very first climb and then get chilled afterwards. A cross-country skiing jacket is lighter, more flexible and more breathable – such as the LÖFFLER Alpha AB Light, made from windproof Airblocc softshell.

Which cross-country skiing jacket is best for changeable weather?

A jacket with detachable sleeves is ideal for changeable weather. The LÖFFLER W Zip-Off Jacket Vario AB Light transforms into a windproof gilet with the flick of a zip. This allows you to adapt to sunshine, climbs or wind without having to take your jacket off.

Is a cross-country skiing jacket waterproof?

Most cross-country skiing jackets are water-repellent but not waterproof. This also applies to the LÖFFLER Airblocc softshell, which remains windproof and breathable. In rain or wet snow, opt for a weatherproof jacket such as the LÖFFLER WPM Colibri with a 20,000 mm water column.
