The perfect cycling shorts – bike seat padding explained

Only a relatively small piece of fabric is needed for cycling shorts but still they are among the most technically demanding and sophisticated pieces of clothing. The demands on fit and comfort are enormous. The processing must be of high quality to ensure functionality and durability.

Of course, different models must meet different requirements. Cyclists are tall or small, light or heavy. There are cycling shorts for women and cycling shorts for men. You sit on different saddles in different riding positions for racing, biking, or touring. And needless to say – the pants should look good.

A second skin

The aim is not to feel the cycling shorts when riding out! But what features does the perfect model need? One requirement is that the pants fit properly – preferably like a second skin. The perfect pants must guarantee maximum freedom of movement without restrictions and pressure or chafe marks. A specialized magazine wrote on this topic:

Find the right bike seat pad

Special attention should be paid to the right seat pad. In the first place, the seat pad should comply with the cyclist and his or her subjective feeling of well-being. However, the intended use also plays an important role. Important factors are the seating position and the time spent on the bike. Cycling shorts – tips & tricks for the right use

  • Do not wear normal underpants under cycling shorts! Choose the right bike seat pad instead.
  • It is vital to by the cycling shorts in the correct size. Too large cycling shorts do not serve their purpose. If in doubt, choose a size smaller. Observe the size chart. Tip: It is better to try on several sizes to decide which size fits best.
  • Wash them! Sweat, salts and suntan lotions make the fabric inflexible and the pants will not stay where they should. Therefore, wash the cycling pants gently after every ride. More cycling shorts are likely to be ruined by washing too seldom than by washing too often. Sweat and oils attack the material. Do not use fabric softener but use normal mild detergent economically. Follow the care label.
  • A damaged or unsuitable saddle (e.g. rough surface, decorative stitching, dirt) can chafe the seat of the pants.
    Saddle pockets on the seat post – often with Velcro fasteners – can cause chafing on the inside of the thighs due to friction. This way, even the best cycling shorts are damaged within a very short time.
  • Caution is also required when wearing clothes over it. Cord stopper belts with sharp edges can, for example, damage the thin, elastic fabric of cycling shorts.
